In Support of Local Artists Benefit Concert
Hosted By Local Community Activists, Academics and Community Leaders


(August 12, 2009 – Chicago, IL) - Local community activists, academics and civic leaders will host a benefit concert for Chicago’s own FM Supreme and Deja K. Taylor on Tuesday, August 18th beginning with reception at 6:00 PM at Young Chicago Authors, followed by the benefit concert 7:00 PM at The Chopin Theater, in support of the artists’ upcoming European tour. FM Supreme and Deja K. Taylor represent the new generation of Chicago entertainment are taking their message of movement abroad.

The benefit reception and concert benefit will be co-hosted by Mr. Bill Ayers, activist and professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago; Ms. Alice Kim, Director of Public Square; and, Ms. Carla Carter, Executive Director of Young Chicago Authors.

“In a world where everything is transforming from local to global, it is empowering to bring Chicago’s hip hop movement far beyond our borders,” said FM Supreme. “Our message of movement fits the hip hop community abroad.”

The event will include a benefit concert featuring performances by world renowned poet Quraysh Ali Lansana, international songstress Ugochi, Chicago natives Poetree Chicago and Kevin Coval and acclaimed lecturer/artist Theaster Gates.

"In order to change the world we must see it through our own lens." said Deja K. Taylor. "I believe art transcends language, we don't have to speak the same language to communicate the urgency of this movement - which is forward."

FM SUPREME has shared the stage with Boyz II Men, MC Lyte, David Banner, Saul Williams and more. She has spoken at the National Hip Hop Convention and has appeared at the MTV Video Music Awards. Deja K Taylor has shared the stage with Common, WillIAm, The Roots, Lupe Fiasco, Pharrell and recently appeared on HBO's Brave New Voices. The European tour will include stops in London and Amsterdam.

Open to the public the benefit reception will begin at 6:00PM followed by a concert at 7:30PM. All proceeds will help offset the personal expenses FM Supreme and Deja K. Taylor will incur.
