Known for her seemingly simple but very nuanced poetry, Szymborska was named by her prominent admirers "Mozart of poetry."

This farewell evening includes readings of Szymborksa’s poetry and memories and reflections on her work by:

Clare Cavanagh, a Professor in the Slavic Department at Northwestern University, the most nominated translator of Szymborska's poetry into English, that is working on a number of volumes with Stanislaw Baraanczak, another great translator of Szymborska’s poetry

Michał Paweł Markowski, The Hejna Family Chair in Polish Language and Literature and Head of the Slavic Department at UIC, a prominent scholar of modern Polish literature.  Just like Szymborska, he spent most of his life in Krakow, where he met the poet.

Bozena Nowicka McLees, Director of the Interdisciplinary Polish Studies at Loyola University, an expert and promoter of Polish literature in Chicago.

The program will also include a short musical tribute by reknown Chicago jazz vocalist Frieda Lee and pianist Marcin Januskiewicz whom will perform compositions sung by Ella Fitzgerald, a favored singer of Wislawa Szymborska.

The evening, conducted in both Polish and English, will conclude with a reception compliments of the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Chicago and the Hejna Family Chair in Polish Language and Literature.
