Here in Chicago, you can get in trouble for lighting a cigarette on a stage. On Thursday night, Tony Clifton not only ignited a fistful of cigarettes, he threw a lit butt into the audience, causing a guy to think his shirt was on fire. Until, that was, gushes of complimentary Jack Daniel's started to spray from the stage, extinguishing all worries in the first three rows.

"Tony Clifton and the Katrina-Kiss-My-Ass Orchestra," ensconced in the wildly incongruous surroundings of the Chopin Theatre and organized as a benefit for Comic Relief, is not an ordinary show. It is a bacchanalia with a horn section that lands somewhere near deep, deep parody, a live taping of a Howard Stern show (although Stern would never dare say some of things that come out of Clifton's mouth), an episode of "Hee-Haw," political satire, a New Orleans jam session led by a decent group of session musicians and an evening at Nevada's Moonlite BunnyRanch, where Clifton hangs out.

It is in heinous bad taste, beyond X-rated, replete with a glamorous dance troupe of dangerously young women and, as the performers get drunker, wildly out of control. If someone you love—and only partially trust—has tickets this weekend, be very afraid. And hide the car keys.

I don't think I've ever left a show I was reviewing. But somewhere around 2 a.m. Friday morning, it dawned on me that the whole point of this show was to keep performing until everybody had left and the performers had all collapsed. Anyway, four hours of Tony "Goldfinger" Clifton was enough. By then, there were only a couple dozen of us left. Clifton, you might recall, was a creation of the late comedian Andy Kaufman. He's a parody of the faded and wholly untalented Vegas sleazeball—a girl-groping lounge lizard with a Dean Martin repertoire, a faux-Sinatra repartee and the dirtiest jokes imaginable. He is now played by former Kaufman sidekick Bob Zmuda. Zmuda does not admit this in public.

Zmuda is, in fact, a gifted improviser, albeit a terrifying one without any semblance of aesthetic boundary. It isn't so much the profane material here that gets under your skin—although it does, it does. It's Zmuda's total assumption of character—it feels even an invasion of armed buffalo wouldn't snap him back to reality. God help him and those who play with him.

“Andy Kaufman created the character of Tony Clifton, a randy, alcoholic lounge singer, but Kaufman didn't always play him. Kaufman's friend Bob Zmuda has been known to perform as Clifton--before and since Kaufman's death in 1984--and this time he might just be the guy behind the giant sunglasses. The promoters will only say it's Tony Clifton, of course. But Zmuda is the director of Comic Relief, the company producing the show, whose proceeds benefit gulf coast artists affected by Hurricane Katrina. The evening starts with projected video of Tony Clifton footage, then turns into a Vegas-style song-and-dance revue featuring the Cliftonettes (a burlesque troupe) and the Katrina Kiss My Ass Orchestra (comprising several New Orleans musicians). In true Kaufman fashion, Clifton never breaks character--he discomfits the crowd with racist remarks and pedophile jokes and apparently sabotages the entire production by arguing with producers and performers, leading to long delays between bits. At the show I saw, Clifton drank incessantly, passing out shots and occasionally pouring liquor on audience members. Some progressively uninhibited fans egged him on, demanding that he get meaner and crazier, which he did, over the course of three and a half hours. By the end half the crowd had bailed, and I really couldn't figure out which parts of the show had been staged. Kaufman would be proud”.

Tony Clifton may well be the rudest, crudest, most musically talentless lounge lizard ever to stalk a stage. But for those of a certain age and/or sensibility, he is an entertainer nonpareil.

As part of a national tour, his performing prowess will be showcased starting Thursday at the Chopin Theatre, 1543 W. Division. Accompanied by the Katrina Kiss My Ass Orchestra, the bellicose balladeer will croon from a vast repertoire of Sinatra, Lynyrd Skynyrd and even Led Zeppelin to raise funds for Gulf Coast artists who were hit by the hurricane.

"This is an amazing, amazing showman," says Clifton's longtime pal Dennis Hof, who owns the Moonlite BunnyRanch brothel in Carson City, Nev., where Clifton is said to be a frequent guest and winter boarder. "And he's the last of his kind." Hof met Clifton a few decades back, when the late hooker-loving comedian Andy Kaufman would swing by the cathouse (which then bore a different name) with his Chicago-born friend Bob Zmuda, who now runs the charity Comic Relief.

In those "crazy" times, Hof says, Andy wasn't always himself.

"I remember one time, Andy partied with 18 girls in two days," he remembers. "And sometimes it was Tony."

Then as now, the man beneath Clifton's garish garb and facial prosthetics never revealed his true identity, even when the toupee-topped lout got famously and forcibly booted from the set of "Taxi," Kaufman's hit sitcom. Aside from their predilection for prostitutes, Clifton and his original portrayer had distinct personalities, disparate world views and seemingly separate lives.

"Andy was very straight. Andy didn't drink. Andy was very gentlemanly," Hof says. "And Tony is very rough and nasty and talks dirty and smokes and drinks and is real stupid."

Devolved though he has into a parody of his former self, Clifton remains as odious as ever -- if suspiciously shorter. Less vertically endowed than his partner in put-ons, Zmuda began playing Clifton as part of Kaufman's act. When Kaufman died of cancer in 1984, Zmuda inherited the poorly tailored mantle for keeps and occasionally trotted Tony out in public.

Until the current tour, those outings were rare. During a recent interview at Chicago's famed Pump Room, Clifton revealed why he hasn't been seen in the States for a while.

"I am an international singing sensation," he proclaimed with comical hubris between swigs of icy Jack Daniel's. "This is true. This is true."

The swaggering superstar spoke in a gruff, nasally tone that approximated barking, was flanked by two babelicious dancers from his show and wore the ever eyesore-ish Clifton uniform: hideous peach-colored tux jacket, expansive dark sunglasses, cheesy rug, cheesier mustache and light blue ruffled tux shirt with bejeweled cuff links that he flashed proudly.

"I have sold more albums than the Beatles and Elvis combined," Clifton continued, amping up the bogus braggadocio. "That is a fact. I just came back from Peru. I was selling out soccer stadiums in Peru. And then I had to leave 'cause I had a little problem one night."

The problem, as Clifton described it, involved a "Mickey Finn," a drunken stupor, a terrified old lady and deportation by local authorities. Hence his triumphant return stateside -- just in time to commemorate the 25th anniversary of Kaufman's death with a booze-soaked, adult-themed, multicity romp. At the Pump Room, Clifton frequently pawed his dolled-up arm candy (Rocky and Keely), moaned pleasurably in their presence and made unprintable remarks about their private parts while holding forth in a semisecluded antechamber near the bar. Eminently game, the lasses just smiled and giggled and reveled in his playfully perverse attentions. The restaurant was nearly empty, but a woman dining within earshot glanced over when Clifton's lewdness grew louder.

"Look at these legs!" he ordered, referring to Keely, a lithe and lively blond. "Lift that up! Show him that leg! That's my thoroughbred. F---in' amazing. Show him. Let him touch it. Show him how tight it is."

The hourlong monologue that followed covered an array of unrelated topics ranging from Irv Kupcinet's old TV show and Frank Sinatra's funeral to Hollywood big shot Danny DeVito, who produced the 1999 Kaufman biopic "Man on the Moon." "DeVito. Now that's a little f---in' midget," Clifton snapped. He went on for several more seconds, then stopped midspew to scold Rocky for interrupting him with her thoughtless yapping.

"I'm telling a f---in' story about f---in' Danny DeVito is a f---in' midget in eight states," he said, exasperated. "Do people know that?"

Clifton also denied being Zmuda ("I ain't f---in' Za-pooda!") or, especially, Kaufman, who some zealots believe faked his death in the ultimate act of practical jokemanship. "You know what I tell people when they yell out 'Kaufman?' " Clifton said. "You know what I say? 'If you came to see Andy Kaufman, get yourself a flashlight and a shovel -- heh-heh-heh -- 'cause that motherf----- is dead! He's a bunch of bones sittin' in some graveyard."

As for this particular blustering, blistering sliver of Kaufman's impish artistic spirit, it's still very much alive -- kind of like Frankenstein's monster, only less genteel. "Do you know I got a mongoloid son? Yeah, I got a mongoloid monstrosity named Toby.

"This is true."

From the Director Comic Relief, in recognition of the 25th anniversary of Andy Kaufman's departure, presents "The Return of Tony Clifton", with his Katrina Kiss My Ass Orchestra a ripping band of 20 musicians, backup singers, and Tony’s Cliftonettes, jaw dropping burlesque dancers, in the intimate surroundings of Chopin Theatre.

By mounting this production, Comic Relief continues its commitment to support artists affected by Hurricane Katrina. The Katrina Kiss-My-Ass Orchestra is comprised of New Orleans and Gulf Coast musicians, singers, dancers and production personnel.

In 2007, Comic Relief donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to New Orleans housing rehabilitation. It is also supporting ongoing efforts to help displaced Katrina animals and support animal rescue operations in times of natural disaster.
