Leaving the Factory - UIC Student Film Showcase

Engaged in a frantic search for something that's been missing, these artists rephrase life size questions by exploring liminal spaces. Somewhere between Mexico City and Madison, the sun and your window, the eye and the brain, two hearts, male and female, blood and water, idleness and productivity, this word and the word next to it, lie the answers.

Here, these seven Chicago artists come together to construct a vast dragnet. With their quandaries drudge up a diverse range of new proposals and problems for our consideration. Featuring the premieres of "Norte y Sur" by Luis Sanchez Ramirez and "Boots for Tula" by Malic Amalya, along with videos by Clare Britt, Dana Carter, Eric Fleischauer, Marivi Ortiz and Todd Simeone.

- On the Edge of Utterance and Being Articulate - A brief introduction to "The Poetics of Space" - An ongoing editing experiment with art, culture, and filmmaker’s own version of the everyday. A short structural video that takes a look at language and voice by editing down a recited text to the space between words and the edges of their meanings. (5 mins)

La sangre no es siempre mas gruesa como el aqua (Blood is not always thicker than Water) - Short video about an estranged sister's failed attempts at a connection with her younger sibling. (5 min)

Norte y Sur - Experimental documentary that focuses on migrant workers's experience. The filmmaker’s mother (Victoria) and father (Enrique) come to the states to work for 8 to 9 months out of the year; at which point they return to Mexico and patiently wait to apply for a visa to come back to the US. They have been doing that for 7 years along with some other members of the family and friends. Enrique is a taxi driver in Mexico City and Victoria cooks for a large group of people to earn a living. When it is time to return to Mexico they take back whatever they can, leaving behind most of their possessions in Madison, not knowing if they will ever be allowed to re enter the United States. Norte y Sur explores issues of representation, alienation, immigration, and mixed media aesthetics. (85 min)

- Cut out - After dissecting Vogue magazines and organizing the found images into color fields, Clare Britt animates the new forms exploding into space.

Video From Yesterday - Presents scenes from the everyday that were captured through a pinhole lens. Here, experimental techniques are used as a way to investigate the role technology plays as a mediating factor on a daily basis. This video allows for a moment of reflection on the beauty that lies hidden in plain sight. (10 min)
