Feb 23rd at 730pm - Tuta presents staged reading and U.S. premiere of "The Silence of the Sea" which takes place in a time of conflict, as an aging Frenchman and his niece are forced to share their home with a young German soldier. Powerless to turn him away, the resist him with silence which becomes their most potent weapon.  This exquistely constructed human drama examines an excruciating dilemma face by both the occupier and the occupied.  Anthony Weigh's stage adapation of Vercos' WWII novella is a quiet tale of defiance and deprivation.

Director - Tuta Company Member Andy Hager directs the staged reading of The Silence of the Sea.  Andy has been working in Chicago theater for the last 15 years.  He has been a member of the TUTA ensemble since 2006, where his favorites include Huddersfield, It's Only the End of the World, Uncle Vanya, and The Wedding.  He's also appeared on several off loop stages including Chicago Dramatists, Next Theatre, City Lit, ATC, Strange Tree, Thunder & Lightning (After Dark Award for Performance in Red Light Winter), Famous Door, Piven, Trap Door, New Leaf, European Rep, Mary-Arrchie, and Theo Ubique.  Earlier this winter, Andy directed the Jeff Recommended production of Through The Leaves at the side project.

Playwright - Anthony Weigh graduated from the National Institute of Dramatic Art, Sydney in 1989 and since then has worked extensively as an actor both in Australia and internationally. His first full length play, 2,000 Feet Away was developed whilst Anthony was on attachment to the National Theatre Studio in London and in residency during the emerging artists season at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh. It had its world premiere at Belvoir Street Theatre, Sydney in November of 2007 and made its UK premiere in June 2008 at The Bush Theatre, London directed by Josie Rourke. Awards and fellowships include the Australia Council for the Arts Emerging Artists Grant, Mick Young Playwright Award, the Mike Walsh Fellowship and the Barry Jackson Scholarship at the University of Birmingham.  Anthony is Associate Artist at the Donmar Warehouse and is under commission to the National Theatre.
