10/2/12 - 10/2/12

430pm

Renaissance Knights Chess Foundation, in partnership with the United States Chess Federation, presents complimentary advance screening of Brooklyn Castle.

This new award-winning documentary focuses on the importance of student academic enrichment and after school programs.  Brooklyn Castle follows the successes and challenges of IS 318 in Brooklyn, NY, the most successful middle school chess team in the nation. While working to excel at the chess board, the students and teachers face another major hurdle as cutbacks to after school programs threaten the very existence of their program.

Since the film was completed, students of IS 318 won the National High School Chess Championships held in Minneapolis last April. This win marks the first time eighth graders have ever achieved this success. The team was featured on the front page of the New York Times
as well as the Wall Street Journal and other outlets. The funding story continues as even more budget cuts threaten their program and programs like it all across the nation.
