SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, CA – August 17, 2010 – Helena Modjeska Society and POL*MAR bring Madame Modjeska back to the Chicago stage after a successful premiere in San Juan Capistrano, California.

In this dynamic solo performance, Ewa Boryczko shares with you the extraordinary journey of famous Polish actress Helena Modjeska, who came to America in 1876 with the dream of performing on the American stage.  After spending more than a decade as the goddess of the Polish national theater, she immigrated to America where, starting in California, Modjeska triumphed beyond her wildest dreams becoming one of the most famous stars of the American Theater.  Modjeska performed alongside such prominent American actors as Edwin Booth and Maurice Barrymore.  With courage, perseverance and great talent, this remarkable woman became the most famous star of her era.  Modjeska! The Artist's Dream tells the gripping and entertaining story of a pursuit of a lifelong artistic ambition, as well as a search for happiness and redemption.

Helena Modjeska was an iconic Polish-American Shakespearean actress of the 19th century. Arden, the actress's home from 1886 to 1906, in what is now Modjeska, CA, is a registered National Historic Landmark. Apart from the town, Modjeska Canyon and Modjeska Peak, both in Orange County, California, are named after her. Ralph Modjeski, Helena's son was  a famous American civil engineer and bridge builder, who designed San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge.


Ewa Boryczko, actor - is a native of Krakow, Poland.  In 1990, after graduating from the Lyceum in Krakow, she came to Chicago to study.  In 1998 she entered the acting program of Columbia College Chicago graduating with honors.  She has performed with Hermit Productions, Prop Theater, Ping Chong Company and Theater Oobleck. 

 

Jon Kellam, director - is currently co-artistic director and co-founding member of Zoo District Theatre, a resident director and member of the Actor's Gang and a member of Ensemble Studio Theater LA.
